Make AI vocabulary cards from your own lesson notes

Create ten traceable vocabulary cards from your notes, with a copyable prompt, answer checks, correction steps and a manual fallback.

This small project turns one page of notes into ten vocabulary cards and a short answer key. AI helps structure supplied material; it is not asked to invent definitions or quotations. The worked sample is fictional and PickByTask did not test a live classroom.

Canva currently offers document, presentation and design formats together with AI writing features. It can be used to lay out a checked card set. Canva's AI terms also make the user responsible for input rights and output use, so remove private student information and review every card. Canva · AI Product Terms

Prepare the source and card format

Choose a short lesson note you own or may use. Mark ten target terms. For each card, require a term, plain-language meaning, one example based only on the note, and a source marker such as paragraph 2. The back of the card contains the meaning and example; the answer key repeats the source marker.

Use Canva to lay out the checked card set, while keeping the teacher's notes as the only source for definitions and examples. Allow an estimated 45–60 minutes for a first ten-card set, excluding account setup and printing.

Copy this starter prompt

Use only the lesson notes below.
Create 10 vocabulary-card drafts.
For each card return: term, plain-language meaning, one short example,
and the exact paragraph number that supports the answer.
If the notes do not support a meaning or example, write NEEDS SOURCE.
Do not add quotations, facts, names or examples from memory.
Then make a separate answer-key table.

Never paste student names, assessment records or confidential material into an AI service without the required authority and settings. A teacher or subject reviewer remains responsible for accuracy.

Build and check the ten cards

  1. Number the source paragraphs and select ten terms that actually appear in them.
  2. Run the prompt, then place every NEEDS SOURCE item in a correction list rather than guessing.
  3. Compare each meaning and example word by word with its cited paragraph.
  4. Rewrite complex wording for the learner's level without changing the fact.
  5. Put the approved text into one consistent card template. Keep the answer side visually distinct and readable in print and on a phone.
  6. Shuffle the cards and ask a reviewer to match each answer to its source paragraph.

Worked fictional sample

Source paragraph: “Evaporation happens when liquid water gains energy and becomes water vapour.” A checked card can ask Evaporation on the front. The back can say “Liquid water changing into water vapour after gaining energy,” with source marker P1. It should not add a boiling temperature because the note does not supply one.

The set passes when all ten terms appear in the notes, every answer points to a supporting paragraph, and the reviewer finds no invented quotation or unsupported example. Record corrections before exporting or printing.

Recover when AI or layout fails

If answers keep drifting beyond the notes, reduce the request to three cards and paste only the relevant paragraphs. If the design tool is unavailable, fold paper into ten cards or use a two-column document. Keep the same answer-key check. A plain, verified set is more useful than a polished set with invented content.
