HeyGen is a candidate for training, marketing, and sales teams producing presenter videos in several languages without reshooting every version. Check translation, proper names, lip sync, and whether the avatar fits the subject.
Start with an approved script. Before using a custom likeness or voice, establish consent, a way to withdraw permission, and disclosure for viewers. This assessment uses information recorded on 1 August 2026, not testing by PickByTask.

What does HeyGen do?
The HeyGen page offers stock/custom avatar, text-to-video, voice, video translation, lip sync, and brand tools. The Help Center document describes the workflow by feature. Having a choice does not guarantee the quality of all languages and avatars.
Stock avatars reduce the burden of creating new likeness. Custom avatars allow the brand to have a continuous presenter but increase the risk of rights. Video translation is suitable for localizing the original footage, but requires a translator to check the content, not just look directly at the voice.
Which use case is it suitable for?
- Onboarding and training scripts are fixed and must be updated periodically.
- sales outreach appropriately disclosed as synthetic video
- product explainer in multiple languages without having to duplicate the presenter
- internal announcement that the organization has permission to use the avatar/voice
Not suitable for news, testimony, or statements that may lead people to believe that a person is telling the truth without saying it. and complex emotional expressions that human presenters are more valuable to.
Visit HeyGen ↗Price of video minutes and credits
HeyGen Pricing Separate plans and feature quota/credit as of inspection date. Buyers should note video minutes, premium feature consumption, translation, avatar slots, resolution, watermark, team seats and API access.
Actual cost is approved minutes. Total time to create duplicates because pronunciation, gesture, translation or lip sync. If 3 minutes must be rendered four times, include all credits and review time.
Thai language and translation QA
Use a Thai-English onboarding script that includes names of people, products, numbers, dates, times, and technical terms. Have the translator check for meaning equivalence separately from the sound checker. Check for line breaks in captions and unique names spoken by the avatar.
Testing lip sync requires viewing both the full page and mobile. Including labial consonants, pauses, and cuts across scenes. Defect timestamps should be kept to correct specific parts. Don't evaluate based on overall feeling.
Avatar quality and uncanny risk
Evaluate eyesight, blinking, hands, posture, lighting, and body contours in every scene. Avatars suitable for training may not be suitable for apologies or sensitive topics. A content class should be defined that allows the use of synthetic presenters.
Tested on big screens and phones. Some natural abnormalities are clearly different. Have a small audience respond with both understanding and trust. Don't just ask, “Is it realistic?”
Visit HeyGen ↗Consent of custom avatar and voice
HeyGen Terms is the main source of requirements, but the team must have a consent record specifying the message, language, channel, duration, use of advertisements, and the right to create new words. The likeness owner must withdraw the right according to the contract.
When an employee leaves, suspend generation, revoke access, delete or archive avatar according to law/contract. and examine old published videos. Having verification when first created does not replace lifecycle governance.
Disclosure and fraud risk
If viewers have a chance to understand that it is footage or real speech, specify the AI-generated avatar/voice near the video, not hidden in the terms page. Political, health, financial, testimonial, and executive communication work must undergo additional legal/ethics review.
Do not use avatars that imitate customers, celebrities, or employees from images found online. Publishing to “test engagement” also uses likeness.
Security and APIs
Trust Center Used to start security review to check DPA, retention, training control, deletion, region, role and audit according to API plan. Must test key scope, rate limit, job failure and webhook without keeping secret script/asset in log.
Demo accounts should use an approved presenter for testing and simulated data. Do not upload real executive footage before approval.
External reviews
G2 shows positive themes of ease, avatars, and video creation, with dissent about price and limitations. Avatars Capterra and GetApp are in the same Gartner pool and are therefore counted as independent only once.
Product Hunt reflects early adopters, Trustpilot searches for billing/support dissent, and TechRadar provides editorial perspective. We do not average ratings across systems.
Visit HeyGen ↗Compare with Synthesia
HeyGen and Synthesia overlap in avatar/translation But it must be compared with the same script, avatar class, language, and governance. Consider Synthesia when enterprise training workflow is important. Consider live shooting when reliability/emotion is higher than speed.
Verdict
It makes sense for HeyGen to experiment when the team already has a multilingual content volume and script approval process in place. If consent is viewed as a one-time document or there is no one responsible for withdrawing likeness, it is not a good idea to create a custom avatar.
A decision table between stock avatars, custom avatars, and real people.
| choice | suitable when | Burden to bear |
|---|---|---|
| stock avatar | General content and no need to refer to specific organization representatives. | Check the suitability of personality and disclosure |
| custom avatar | Need a continuous presenter with a clear contract | consent, access, revocation and old videos |
| real presenter | trust, emotion or accountability is important | Shooting schedule, localization and production costs |
Don't choose a custom avatar just because it looks more on-brand. If an organization does not have a consent registry owner, long-term governance costs may be higher than if they were new.
Export, caption and sending to LMS
Open the export file in the actual video editor and LMS. Check for resolution, audio loudness, caption format, thumbnail and analytics that remain after the move. If captions are burned-in only accessibility And editing words later will be more difficult than separate caption files.
For a localized set, tie the video ID to the script version and source language. When modifying the policy, one must know which language the video is affected by. You should not search by hand by file name.
Support and moderation test
Send a question about pronunciation and consent removal using test avatars, record response path, identity verification, and deactivation time. Test in case of generation rejection to understand moderation. Do not wait for actual incident to learn escalation channels.
If viewers report that your avatar is misleading, include a correction path and owner within your CTA or publishing page. Transparency must be resolved after publishing, not just disclosure during creation.
